Introduction to Judith Butler, Module on Gender and Sex

On Butler’s account, it is on the basis of the construction of natural binary sex that binary gender and heterosexuality are likewise constructed as natural.

One of her most influential and well known works is called 'Gender Troubles'.

Butler argues that sex (male, female) is seen to cause gender (masculine, feminine) which is seen to cause desire (towards the other gender). This is seen as a kind of continuum. Butler's approach -- inspired in part by -- is basically to smash the supposed links between these, so that gender and desire are flexible, free-floating and not 'caused' by other stable factors.

The performance of gender, sex, and sexuality, however, is not a voluntary choice for Butler.

Other feminist philosophers, for example, Nancy Holland, utilize theoverlapping critiques of Harding and Jaggar, particularly that ofabstract individualism, and take them to be telling of Anglo-Americanphilosophy in general. Holland takes Locke and Hume as well ascontemporary analytic philosophers to exemplify Anglo-Americanphilosophy (1990). Holland focuses on the metaphysical assumptions ofempiricism that exclude women from philosophy. She writes thatcontemporary analytic philosophy, “by remaining within theEmpiricist tradition, inherits not only the problems of that tradition, but also a self-definition that identifies it as necessarily men's philosophy….[Men's] philosophy defines itself throughout its history in such a way as to exclude what our culture defines as women's experience from what is considered to be properly philosophical” (1990, 3).

Judith Butler’s Trouble in Gender Essay -- feminist studies

Butler offers a critique of the terms gender and sex, even as they have been used by feminists.

Butler also says that it would be impossible for men and women to be seen as equals if the feminist ideologies are making an even clearer distinction between males and females She questions the belief that certain gendered behaviors are natural, illustrating the ways that one's learned performance of gendered behavior (what we commonly associate with femininity and masculinity) is an act of sorts, a performance, one that is imposed upon us by normative heterosexuality.

Gender Trouble by Judith Butler: Summary & Concept - …

; it represents an impressive effort on the part of non-state actors from both the Israeli and the Palestinian communities to try and make a peace independent of state governments. But even the Geneva Accord cannot be implemented if the wall is not first dismantled. And the Geneva Accord will not be sufficient to maintain the peace until the issue of Palestinian refugees is addressed. The institution of a Palestinian state will not by itself nullify the claims to the land or the petition for restoration. Nor will it address the internal racism and hierarchy that afflicts the institution of Israeli citizenship, where Arab Israelis, including Arab Jews, Christians, and Muslims, suffer second class status, and where the income levels between Ashkenazi and Mizrahim continue to be stark and unjust, and where the founding narratives and the dominant culture are derived from the Aliyah from Europe.

Two thumbs up for this movie successfully showing how stupidly brutally people can react when someone doesn't toe the social line. Brandon Teena dresses in a masculine way but is actually female. When some Nebraska man's men discover that Brandon is transgendered, they murder him in a horrific way. It's gut-wrenching, and based on a true story, to boot.
